Judge Crosbie has prepared a minute in relation to Pre-trial applications and Trials to be heard in Timaru in the upcoming weeks.
It is envisaged that in consultation with the Crown, the defence bar will be able identify those trials that we think are ready and suitable for trial. Some have already been identified with the Crown.
I can confirm the that Legal Services Agency has committed in writing that all costs associated with travel, accommodation meals etc will be met by them in relation to counsel in accordance with the Act.
The costs associated with ensuring the presence of our clients will be met by either Corrections or Ministry of Justice.
There should be no extra costs to you or your client.
I would commend to you all the use of the AVL facilities particularly where a witness maybe required for oral evidence but the cross-examination is going to be short.
Cleary it is going to be in our best interests that we make this work given the possible lengthy delays in being able to access the Christchurch Court building.
If you could contact either me or Chris Lange with any names of accused that you think are ready for trial in order that arrangements can be made to get things moving along.
If you need disclosure in respect to a particular file the Crown have indicated such will be made available to you to ensure you can properly prepare for trial. Could you please contact Chris Lange to make those requests.
