More quake related scams surface

Several scams relating to the Christchurch earthquake have surfaced in the past few days.

The EQC has reported that people claiming to be EQC assessors have been visiting houses outside of EQC working hours. Genuine EQC assessment teams are operating only between the hours of 8am and 6pm, and are operating seven days a week. The EQC says “all EQC teams carry official identification and residents should ask to see this if they are in any doubt.

“The EQC teams will not ask to go inside houses and will base their assessments on external checks.”

The ANZ bank reports that some of their customers have received an email claiming to be from ANZ about the Canterbury Earthquake asking them to update their Customer Registration Number and Password.

ANZ says “if you receive this email please don't click on any links or reply, simply delete the email from your inbox and deleted items.”

ANZ have also advised that scammers were calling people saying they were representatives from the bank and were asking people to donate money into a fake account. ANZ say that they are not soliciting donations from the public over the telephone in New Zealand. (Source: EQC website and ANZ website).
