Photo identification card

The New Zealand Law Society offers the opportunity to purchase an optional photo identification card to anyone holding a current New Zealand practising certificate.

Purpose

The ID cards show that the holder has a current legal practising certificate issued b ythe Law Society. They are intended to assist with quick and reliable identification in situations where lawyers may need to prove their identity. These include courthouse security, prison security, other out-of-office client visits, and in carrying out Lawyer for the Child duties and other matters in the Family Courts.

How to obtain an ID card

ID cards are issued under an agreement between the Law Society and the New Zealand Automobile Association (AA). Cards are available from any of 93 AA drivers licensing centres and agencies around New Zealand. It is necessary to visit an AA drivers licensing location to obtain a card. You will need your current practising certificate plus some government-issued ID, such as a passport or driver’s licence. Following production of appropriate ID and creation of a digital signature and photograph, the card is processed by AA and will be mailed to you a few days later.

Cost

A card costs $18.50 (GST included).

Acceptability

While acceptance of the ID card is often subject to discretion, the Law Society has provided information on its purpose to agencies such as the Ministry of Justice and Department of corrections.
