Find A Lawyer
The New Zealand Law Society operates a special online Find a Lawyer database to help anyone who needs legal services to identify a lawyer with the right skills and in the desired location easily. The database can also be used to locate a particular law firm or practice by name.
Accessing the service
Find a Lawyer is located on the Law Society’s website.
Lawyers can be found by setting requirements in several search fields. These are:
- Surname or First Name (if known);
- Area of Practice (using 23 categories); and/or
- Language (38 languages specified).
The search presents a list of lawyers who match the search requirements. This is presented alphabetically, but can be sorted by location, type of practice, or practice name.
Information on each lawyer identified by the search provides full contact details, date of admission as a lawyer, current practising certificate status, and a full list of areas of practice and languages spoken.
The Find a Lawyer service does not list lawyers who are not in private practice, such as in-house lawyers. Barristers are included, but users are advised that in most cases a barrister will need to be instructed by a barrister and solicitor (any barrister contacted will advise on this).
Register of lawyers
As regulator of the New Zealand legal profession, the New Zealand Law Society is required to maintain a current publicly searchable Register of Lawyers for all lawyers holding a current practising certificate. This is also available on the Law Society’s website. The Register is searchable by first name or surname, and is the official confirmation of whether a person is able to use the term 'lawyer' to describe themselves.
Find a family lawyer
The New Zealand Law Society’s Family Law Section provides a special service called “Find a Family Lawyer”. While the Law Society’s Find a Lawyer service will identify lawyers who practise in family law, the Family Law Section service enables the location of lawyers belonging to the Section who specialise in particular aspects of family law – such as guardianship, paternity, mental health or relationship property.
Find a Family Lawyer is located at www.familylaw.org.nz/public/find_a_lawyer.
Find a property lawyer
The New Zealand Law Society’s Property Law Section provides a special service called “Find a Property Lawyer”. While the Law Society’s Find a Lawyer service will identify lawyers who practise in property law, the Property Law Section service enables the location of lawyers belonging to the Section who specialise in particular aspects of property law – such as commercial property, retirement villages, trusts and wills or resource management.
Find a Property Lawyer is located at www.propertylawyers.org.nz/public/find_a_lawyer.
