The NZLS Library in Christchurch remains closed after the 22 February earthquake. No access is possible to the Courts building in which the Library is located. The building is currently cordoned within the 'red zone'. The Courts building and NZLS Library collection have suffered damage and no information is yet available on how long it will be before the location will be operational, however this is expected to take some time.
NZLS staff based in Christchurch will relocate to a new building in the north west part of the city, in early April. Staff are working remotely in the meantime. Several computers will be made available in the new location for practitioners to access the NZLS collection of electronic legal resources.
Once working from the new location, Library staff will be relying on the NZLS electronic collection, and where possible inter-loaning texts from other libraries or purchasing newly published editions of key texts until it is possible to return to the Library in the Courts building.
Some Christchurch matters have been transferred to Courts in Ashburton and Timaru. The NZLS electronic collection is available from computers in Solicitors’ rooms at both these locations.
Canterbury Library staff can be contracted by email at canterbury@nzlslibrary.org.nz. Phone enquiries can be made to the Wellington (04) 473 6202 or Auckland libraries (09) 304 1020.
