Regulatory

Regulation of New Zealand lawyers is governed by the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 and the regulations and rules made under that Act.

The New Zealand Law Society's regulatory functions (and powers) are covered by Part 4 of the Act:

  • to control and regulate lawyers engaged in legal practice in New Zealand
  • to uphold the fundamental obligations imposed on lawyers who provide regulated services
  • to monitor and enforce the provisions of the Act and regulations and rules made under it, that relate to lawyer
  • to assist and promote law reform.
