Company and commercial law still main area of legal practice

More lawyers specialise in company and commercial law than in any other area of practice, according to information from the New Zealand Law Society.

Data obtained from practising certificate holders shows that at 1 August 2011, 1100 lawyers said they spent over half their time working in company and commercial law. That was 9.8% of all lawyers holding a practising certificate.

Property law work was the next most important field, with 1007 lawyers (9.0%) spending over half their time on it.

These were followed by civil litigation (824 lawyers, 7.4% of total), family law (690 lawyers, 6.2%) and criminal law (600 lawyers, 5.4%).
