Law Society busy with submissions on legislation

The New Zealand Law Society made submissions on 97 Bills and discussion documents in the year to 30 June 2010.

The Society’s annual report on the exercise of its regulatory functions and powers was tabled in Parliament by Justice Minister Simon Power on 29 October.

It states that the Society has a regulatory function of assisting and promoting the reform of the law. The purposes are to uphold the rule of law and to facilitate the administration of justice.

“The New Zealand Law Society examined all Bills introduced to Parliament and made submissions on 32 Government Bills,” the report says. “It appeared before Select Committees on 26 of those Bills. The submissions were prepared by the voluntary contribution of members of the Law Society Law Reform Committee with assistance from specialist committees and sectional interest groups.”

The specialist committees also prepared submissions on four Law Commission and 61 submissions on discussion documents from Government departments and statutory bodies.
