Lawyers reminded to record continuing legal education

New Zealand lawyers are being reminded of a request to record information on their legal education in the period from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011.

The information obtained will be used to assist the New Zealand Law Society in its development of appropriate continuing legal education programmes to meet the needs of New Zealand lawyers.

Lawyers who hold a current practising certificate were earlier this year sent a notice which asked them to keep a record of all professional legal education - including formal continuing legal education (CLE) - they undertake in from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011.

The notice provided a draft form and guidance notes – for optional use – but stressed that any format was fine. NZLS says that at this stage it is more important that lawyers remember to record their legal education over the course of the year than the niceties of their recording system.

The information is requested:

  • To get a better idea of how much professional education lawyers are currently undertaking, where from, on what topics;
  • To help design a continuing legal education programme that meets the needs of New Zealand lawyers; and
  • To trouble-shoot any problems the results highlight.

A copy of the form is available online.

Lawyers with queries should email the Law Society at inquiries@lawsociety.org.nz or call Roz Jackson (04) 463 2925.
