The New Zealand Law Society is a statutory body set up under the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006. Its members comprise all lawyers holding a current practising certificate, which they obtain annually from the New Zealand Law Society. Various people are able to comment on behalf of the New Zealand Law Society, including the President, Executive Director, other elected officers, and the conveners and members of the society's various specialist committees and sections.

Complaints about lawyers
Complaints about lawyers must be made to the Lawyers Complaints Service, which may resolve the complaint itself or may refer it to the Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal, run by the Ministry of Justice.

Submissions
The NZLS makes submissions on most Bills before Parliament and on other matters of law reform, such as those being addressed by the NZ Law Commission.
