The New Zealand Law Society offers members the opportunity to purchase an optional photo identification card.
The Lawyer ID cards show that the holder has a current legal practising certificate issued by the Law Society. They are intended to assist with quick and reliable identification in situations where lawyers may need to prove their identity. These include courthouse security, prison security, other out-of-office client visits, and in carrying out Lawyer for the Child duties and other matters in the Family Courts.
A card costs $11.50 (including GST), payable to the Law Society.
(Please note, this service was previously offered in partnership with the NZ Automobile Association. This service has been brought in-house by the Law Society and applications can now be made via the form below.)
While acceptance of the ID card is often subject to discretion, the Law Society has provided information on its purpose to agencies such as the Ministry of Justice and Department of corrections.
Inquiries related to your practising certificate may be made by emailing registry@lawsociety.org.nz or by phoning 0800 22 30.
