The New Zealand Law Society’s Property Law Section represents the interests of a large number of New Zealand’s property lawyers. The Section provides services and support for its members relevant to the development and practice of property law in New Zealand.
Over 4,000 New Zealand lawyers carry out some property law work. This ranges from commercial and residential property conveyancing and transactions to rural property, Maori land, resource management, retirement villages and wills and trusts.
As a Law Society section, the Property Law Section recognises the special nature of property law practice. It is active in property law reform activities and as a means of supporting and assisting in the professional development of property lawyers.
The Section has a number of objectives:
The Property Law Section was established in 2000. The Section has about 1,30 members. Only practising lawyers may be full members, while associate membership of the Section is available to others who have an interest in or work in property law.
Law Society staff provide secretarial and administrative support and the governance is through an Executive Committee of property lawyers elected by members.
The Property Law Section provides regular information on changes and developments in property law, and publishes a quarterly magazine, The Property Lawyer. The Section’s website has a members-only area with membership services, best practice guidelines and information. The Section is active in property law reform and prepares and delivers submissions on all relevant developments in the law. It runs an accreditation scheme and provides marketing and branding opportunities for members. The Section also facilitates networking and discussion among members.
The Property Law Section provides a special public website service called “Find a Property Lawyer”. This enables the location of lawyers belonging to the Section who specialise in particular areas of property law – such as commercial property, retirement villages, trusts and wills or resource management.
Find a Property Lawyer is located at www.propertylawyers.org.nz/public/find_a_lawyer.
The Section’s website is located at www.propertylawyers.org.nz. Inquiries can be emailed to property@lawsociety.org.nz or phone (04) 463 2966.
