Wellington courts conviction rate below NZ average

Information released by Statistics New Zealand shows that 69.9% of all prosecuted charges in District Courts and the High Court in the Wellington court cluster resulted in a conviction in 2011.

This was below the national average of 74.5%, and - after the Auckland court cluster (62.2%) - was the lowest conviction rate in New Zealand.

The Wellington courts cluster also had the third-highest diversion rate in the country at 6.1% of all prosecuted charges, behind Dunedin (8.8%) and North Shore (7.7%). A relatively high 23.0% of all prosecuted charges in Wellington courts were not proved - above the national average of 20.5%.
