General Counsel - Retail - Auckland
Do you want to lead and develop a specialist in-house legal team, and help lead the business as a member of the Senior Leadership team?
Public Trust is seeking an experienced senior leader to head up our Retail Legal team as General Counsel, Retail. This role is a key business partner for our Retail business, and a member of our enterprise Senior Leadership team.
About the role:
You will be responsible for managing our Retail Legal team which operates as an internal law firm, delivering specialist legal advice to Public Trust's front line advisers. You will lead a team of 21 solicitors and Legal Executives who are specialists in trusts and estate law. You will contribute to the organisation as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, and report directly to the GM Legal and Governance. Responsibilities include:
- Coaching, developing and managing a high performing team of passionate, committed and capable people with the right skills and experience
- Creating and maintaining a strong business partnering relationship with the Retail Leadership team and being integrated in the business
- Managing and maximising individual and team productivity and revenue targets
- Ensuring processes and systems are effective for work allocation to support Retail with the right work being done at the right level and meeting SLAs
- Developing and maintaining modern legal precedents, material and tools to assist the business in delivering quality services, with simplicity being a clear guiding principle.
- Business development for our external brand.
While we would prefer the role be based at our Auckland CBD head office, we can consider other locations for the right applicant.
What we're looking for:
Excellent leadership skills are essential, with a well-developed ability to manage workflow and drive the team. You will be results driven, with a dedication to productivity and revenue, as the Retail Legal team are responsible for a significant contribution to our Retail revenue. You will have a proven ability to mentor and develop a professional legal team, develop career pathways and plan for succession. You need to have a current legal practicing certificate from the NZ Law Society and at least 10 years' senior legal experience (in-house or in a legal firm). A well-developed expertise in trusts and estates law is preferable but isn't a must as we have a team who are experts in this!
