Legal Standards Officer — Early Resolution Service — Wellington

We are recruiting a Legal Standards Officer (LSO) to join our busy regulatory team in our Wellington office. The Lawyers Complaints Service (LCS) handles complaints about lawyers. Working in the Early Resolution team of the LCS, the main focus of this role is to use dispute resolution to resolve inquiries, concerns and complaints. The LSO is responsible for:

  • assisting with the resolution of complaints and concerns using dispute resolution
  • responding to inquiries from the legal profession and the public
  • promoting the use of dispute resolution within the LCS
  • assisting standards committees according to LCS processes
  • drafting decisions

Dispute resolution experience is essential for this role and a formal qualification in dispute resolution would be advantageous. The ideal candidate will also have a law degree (or equivalent) but as a minimum this role requires an understanding of legal processes. Excellent organisational, planning, and time management skills are crucial to succeed in this role. As the LSO will be dealing with a wide range of people, including the public and members of the legal profession, this role requires someone with an open and flexible approach as well as excellent written and oral communication skills. This will be a busy and challenging role with important responsibilities.

This is a full time (minimum of 30 hours/week) permanent position.
