Courage amidst chaos: The mission to save the Afghan Women Judges
Justice Susan Glazebrook is a Judge of Te Kōti Mana Nui o Aotearoa/Supreme Court of New Zealand and the immediate past president of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ). Before being appointed to the Bench, Justice Glazebrook was a partner in a large commercial law firm and a member of various commercial boards and government advisory committees. She served as the President of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association in 1998. Since becoming a Judge, Justice Glazebrook has served as a member of the Advisory Council of Jurists for the Asia-Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (from 2002 to 2010) and from 2007 to 2012 chaired the Institute of Judicial Studies/Te Kura Kaiwhakawā, the body responsible for judicial education in New Zealand. In 2014 Justice Glazebrook was made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the judiciary.
David is a general practitioner who did his medical training in South America and specialised in Family & Community Medicine in Spain. He has been living and working in Southland (Invercargill Medical Centre) since 2015. He is one of the founders of the CHROMA Initiative for Southland and currently chairs the committee of this charitable trust. One of the drivers and main goals of this initiative is to create greater awareness and visibility around the LGBTQIA+ community in the Southland area. His interest in activism comes from his experience with negative stereotypes and the effects these have on bullying, the appearance of mood disorders and their influence on people’s general health and well-being.
James is a Senior Associate at Anderson Lloyd based in Dunedin. He has particular specialist expertise in advising on and conducting complex workplace investigations involving dishonesty, fraud, sexual misconduct, bullying, regulatory breaches and quasi-criminal matters, or other serious misconduct across all industries. Prior to joining Anderson Lloyd in late-2017, James worked in the Forensic team at Deloitte in Auckland. James also commonly advises on legal issues involving recovery of money, workplace privacy, information disclosure, health and safety, and whistleblowing.
With an extensive law enforcement career focusing on investigating crimes against persons, specialising in sex crimes, child abuse, domestic violence, human trafficking, and crimes against the elderly, Steven Bradley was recruited by the FBI to investigate technology and cyber related crimes. After graduating the FBI Academy with honors, he began combating many types of technology related crimes including cyber-terrorism, network intrusions, cyberstalking, financial exploitation, and apprehending child predators. Later in his career, Steven began working with National and State Coalitions, as well as local domestic violence/sexual assault centers on bridging the gaps between law enforcement and community partners to better support survivors and victims. Steven is internationally recognized as an expert on law enforcement’s response to intimate partner violence, technology forensics, and stalking/cyberstalking.
Bridget holds a Bachelor of Speech and Language Therapy (BSLT) from the University of Canterbury. She has twenty-seven years’ experience working as a speech-language therapist with children, young people and adults across the Education, Oranga Tamariki and Health sectors in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Cook Islands. Bridget has extensive experience working with children and adults with developmental and acquired communication conditions with a special interest in neurodiversity and access to the community. Bridget has worked as a Court Appointed Communication Assistant since 2017, providing comprehensive assessments of vulnerable persons’ (both witness and defendants) functional communication ability, with recommendations for special measures.
Kate Rouch is an experienced litigator, public lawyer, and proud alumna of the University of Otago.
She is a senior associate at Dentons in Wellington, where her specialist areas are judicial review, professional disciplinary, public law and all manner of civil litigation (with a particular focus on natural disaster damage and insurance). In her previous roles Kate acted for the Crown in criminal prosecutions, and before that as defence counsel to legally aided clients. Kate is also a member of the New Zealand Law Society’s National Standards Committee.
Kate Keddell, Mediator and Workplace Investigator, is based in Dunedin and works around Otago and Southland. From her admission in 2000 until 2018, she practised as a commercial lawyer, predominantly at Anderson Lloyd. Since then, she has used her legal experience in a variety of ways, most recently being a Senior Resolution Practitioner at Fair Way Resolution. Kate sits on the Council of AMINZ.
Malcolm Wallace is a Christchurch based (but Taieri bred) barrister, arbitrator and mediator with over 30 years’ experience in commercial and property litigation, insolvency, trust and estate claims, and relationship property. A Fellow of AMINZ (Arb), Malcolm is Vice-President of the Council. Malcolm is a member of the NZCRS Panel of Mediators helping parties resolve Christchurch Earthquake Insurance claims.
Derek is a Partner at national firm Anderson Lloyd. He heads up the firm's Technology & Digital practice from their Queenstown office. He has over 20 years' experience gained at international firms in London, Hong Kong and offshore with a deep sectoral focus on technology matters, including systems procurement, data privacy and, more recently, blockchain and AI. Derek is recognised as a leading lawyer for Technology, Media and Telecoms (TMT) in The Legal 500 (Asia Pacific) 2024.
Inger is a specialist family law barrister based in central Auckland and has been in practice since 1994. Inger has particular expertise on cross border and complex family law cases and regularly appears at all levels of the New Zealand court system both within and outside the Auckland region.
Inger is a Fellow of the IAFL (International Academy of Family Lawyers) and is the current Vice President of the Asia- Pacific chapter. She served as Co-Chair of the Family Law & Family Rights Section (Legal Practice division) of LAWASIA and has been the NZ representative on the Committee since 2005. Inger is also a member of the panel of lawyers who undertake work for the Central Authority (NZ Govt) in relation to applications under the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction and the International Recovery of Maintenance.
Peter Sygrove is a Principal at Todd & Walker Law based in Queenstown. Peter specialises in property, projects, construction, and leasing. Peter is also recognised for his in-depth knowledge of the Overseas Investment Act 2005 and has acted on a number of high profile applications to the Overseas Investment Office.
Trevor Shiels KC is a graduate of the University of Otago. After a number of years in general practice, with particular experience in real property and commercial work, he went to the independent bar in 1992. Trevor has advised and represented clients in a range of civil proceedings, but he now primarily advises and appears on disputes and potential disputes in relation to vendor/purchaser, lessor/lessee and other real property matters, trusts, and other equitable matters. Trevor also acts on significant disputes with central and local government.
Trevor also accepts instructions as an arbitrator, being a Fellow in Arbitration and Arbitration panel member of AMINZ, and as a Hearings Commissioner under the Resource Management Act being accredited by MFE to chair RMA hearings. Trevor has Chambers in Auckland and Dunedin.
Lauren is an Associate in Webb Farry’s Corporate/Commercial and Property teams. She has a wealth of knowledge on complex company law matters, commercial and residential property law, and also estate planning and elder law. She also has specialist knowledge on Trust Law and enjoys supporting and advising clients in these areas.
Lauren joined Webb Farry in 2021 after working at a leading boutique law firm in Christchurch and Wellington. She is a committee member of the Otago Women Lawyer’s Society and enjoys exploring the Southern region’s great outdoors.
Gary Hughes is a leading independent barrister handling regulatory investigations, enforcement and prosecutions, civil disputes, risk & compliance advice. He has well over 25 years’ experience dealing with regulators including the Financial Markets Authority, Commerce Commission, Serious Fraud Office, Privacy Commission, and Police FIU. Since 2008 Gary has increasingly specialised in anti-money laundering/financial crime law, and is widely regarded as NZ’s most experienced AML-CFT lawyer. Shi Sheng Cai (Shoosh) is a Senior Associate at Copeland Ashcroft and regularly acts for employers to help with immigration matters. He has over 7 years of work experience in the immigration sector including experience in the areas of global mobility, corporate immigration, investor migration and expertise with complex New Zealand immigration matters. Shoosh is a member of the Law Association Immigration Committee and is an author for Thomson Reuters Human Rights Law resource.
