The New Zealand Law Society Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa is the professional body for barristers and solicitors in New Zealand. The Law Society regulates all lawyers practising in New Zealand and is the membership organisation for practising lawyers. With 13 branch offices throughout the country, the Law Society is the Kaitiaki (guardian) of the practice of law in Aotearoa New Zealand and consumers of legal services.
About the role
We are seeking an exceptional candidate to join our Lawyers Complaints Service in our Investigations team. The role is based in our Wellington branch.
Appointed by Standards Committees, Investigators prepare investigation plans, collect and analyse information and evidence, undertake interviews and prepare investigation reports for the benefit of Standards Committees.
As an Investigator, you will work alongside your peers and management to achieve timely completion of investigations which may include matters involving harassment, bullying and discrimination, as well as sensitive (including sexual abuse) and high-profile cases.
You will be supported by Senior Investigators who lead complex investigations, business improvement initiatives and coach, train and mentor investigators to develop their skills.
The work is challenging, varied, fast-paced and can be demanding. It requires sound judgement, and a high level of personal and professional integrity, and resilience.
The ideal applicant will have:
• A tertiary qualification in regulatory investigations or law or other relevant qualification
• Experience in a similar regulatory investigation position is essential
• Experience in the interpretation and application of legislation and legal principals would also be a highly advantageous
• Experience within the legal sector would be a benefit
• Very strong investigative skills, with good organisational practices
• A qualification in mediation would be a benefit, though not essential
• Experience in completing cost assessments would be a benefit, though not essential
• The ability to prioritise, implement systems, meet deadlines and to plan and structure workload
• Sound judgement and a high level of discretion
• Strong decision-making skills, and experience in managing sensitive issues and risk
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to talk to people from a variety of different backgrounds in sometimes tense or sensitive situations
• A very high standard of written and oral communication skills with the ability to produce concise, well-structured, and well-reasoned reports
• The ability to work well as part of a team as well as the ability to work autonomously
• Flexibility to travel nationwide
• A professional supportive approach to members of the public
