Do you want to work with a dedicated group of lawyers and lay people? Want to make a difference and help uphold standards in your profession?
Expressions of interest are sought for a lawyer member position on a Lawyers Standards Committee based in Hawke’s Bay. The position is for an initial term of two years.
To be eligible for appointment as a lawyer member on a Standards Committee you must have practised as a lawyer for a period or periods aggregating not less than five years. You need to be of good character and have the skill, experience and judgment needed to investigate and consider complaints. You won’t do this on your own, you will work collaboratively with others, but there is reading and preparation to do before each mostly monthly meeting. These usually occur in-person and occasionally remotely.
The Standards Committee concerned is seeking an accomplished general practitioner experienced in one or more of the following areas: trusts, estates, property, company/commercial, family law. If you practise in other areas as well, that would be a bonus.
The Law Society is committed to the principles of diversity and inclusion. We really need to ensure that Lawyers Standards Committees represent the society that the legal profession serves, so we need and encourage applications from diverse backgrounds. Are you a younger lawyer? Excellent. Got a second language? Perfect.
