Legislation website to become source of official legislation from 6 January 2014

The Chief Parliamentary Counsel will issue official electronic legislation via the New Zealand Legislation website from 6 January 2014.

At present, only legislation printed and published by the Parliamentary Counsel Office or the New Zealand Government is official.

Section 17 of the Legislation Act 2012 will allow the publication of PDFs of official legislation. Section 18 provides that an official version of legislation as originally enacted or made is taken to correctly set out the text of legislation. Official legislation is taken by the courts to correctly state the law without any further proof of its accuracy unless the contrary is shown.

The Parliamentary Counsel Office says that also on 6 January 2014 a new feature will allow users to order a commercially printed copy of any Act, Legislative Instrument, Bill, or Supplementary Order Paper from the New Zealand Legislation website.

The PCO says that with the move to providing up-to-date legislation online, it will stop providing some of its hardcopy products. Publication of traditional printed reprints will stop after the current reprinting programme has been completed.

The 2013 bound volumes of legislation, to be published early in 2014, will be the last published by the PCO.
