Average of 16.1 events per High Court criminal case
During September 2019 there were an average of 16.1 events per disposed criminal case in the High Court, information released by Justice Minister Andrew Little has revealed.
Mr Little released the information in response to a written parliamentary question from National MP Mark Mitchell. Mr Mitchell had asked for the average number of appearances per matter in the criminal justice system.
Mr Little said an "event" was either a hearing in a courtroom (including administrative events, pre-trial hearings, trials and sentencings) or an administrative event dealt with on the papers.
The statistics obtained were based on the Ministry of Justice's Case Management System as at 7 October 2019. The data represents the average number of events which occurred for each of the disposed cases for the 12 months ending September 2019.
As well as the High Court average, Mr Little said there were an average of 5.1 events per criminal disposed case in the District Court, and 8.8 events per criminal disposed case in the Youth Court.
