Privacy awareness forums during Privacy Week

Next week is Privacy Week with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner holding a series of lunchtime forums from 8-12 May.

The forums are filling up and the Office is urging anyone in Wellington or Auckland to register asap.  The Office is also live streaming each forum (except for Privacy in Broadcasting) and they will also be able to be viewed afterwards on demand on You Tube

  • Privacy in Broadcasting (8 May in Wellington) with Belinda Moffat and Patricia Windle of the Broadcasting Standards Authority.
  • Privacy in Employment (8 May in Wellington) with Susan Hornsby-Geluk and Blair Scotland from Dundas Street Employment Lawyers.
  • Privacy on the Internet (9 May in Wellington) with Netsafe's Angela Webster and InternetNZ's Ben Creet.
  • Driving Trusted Data Use with Dame Diane Robertson of the Data Futures Partnership (11 May in Auckland).
  • Seminar on damages for privacy breaches.Associate Professor Gehan Gunasekara and Niveet Singh discuss the recent trend of larger damages being awarded by the Human Rights Review Tribunal for breaches of the Privacy Act. This University of Auckland Privacy Week lunchtime event is on at 12pm at the University of Auckland Business School on 8 May.
Privacy Week resources

The Office says lawyers should keep an eye on its homepage, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn for more Privacy Week resources. These will include Privacy ABC (an e-learning mini-module), a Privacy Week quiz, and a general privacy awareness brochure. We'll also be featuring short privacy videos from the Goethe-Institut Washington's Plurality of Privacy Project in Five Minute Plays. We’ll be featuring a video a day during Privacy Week.

iappANZ privacy workshop

Register now for the iappANZ Privacy Week breakfasts in Wellington on 9 May and Auckland on 10 May. The guest speaker will be David Lacey of IDCare who will be discussing the topic Rights, Responsibilities and Roller-Coasters – The Inevitability of a Data Breach.

There's also the Raising Your Privacy Brand seminar and workshop with peak performance consultant Shona Rowan in Auckland and Wellington on 1 and 2 June respectively. The interactive session is designed to equip privacy professionals with a range of tools and techniques to raise the privacy brand and increase awareness and exposure.
