14 July 2020 - By Helen Nathan

Well-known Rotorua lawyer Roger Brewster passed away on 25 June 2020 at the age of 87.  Roger was also a Coroner in the city for several years.

Roger Brewster

In 1958 he joined Ted East at the firm which had been established in 1913 by Les Dingle. For many years he was the senior partner in the firm which became East Brewster, and remained there until his retirement in 2003. He proudly described it as the oldest firm in Rotorua.

Roger was a man of the utmost integrity – he could be totally relied by his staff, his clients and other lawyers.  Over the decades he contributed enormously to the legal careers of many young lawyers and maintained a sharp legal brain right to the end of his long career.

His experience encompassed Māori land, commercial development, estate and property work and his enthusiasm and passion for the law and for innovation enabled him to stay abreast of developments both in the law and in practice. Even in retirement Roger continued to be a valuable mentor and supporter of his former partners and staff.

Roger’s contribution to the community was also significant.  He was the honorary solicitor for many charities and societies, and supported music, theatre and art organisations in Rotorua. All of these things he did without seeking recognition or reward.

Roger was an excellent lawyer, a consummate professional and a true gentleman.  He will be sadly missed by his family, his friends, and all those who had the pleasure to work with him.

Helen Nathan is a Partner at Morrison Kent which merged with East Brewster in 2019.
