New Zealand's Solicitor-General Una Jagose QC will present the annual New Zealand Law Foundation Ethel Benjamin Commemorative Address in Dunedin on 24 October.

The New Zealand Law Foundation Ethel Benjamin Commemorative Address is facilitated by the Otago Women Lawyers' Society and is a celebration of the achievements of women in law and the continuing preservation and pioneering spirit of the first woman lawyer, Ethel Benjamin.

In its 23rd year, it also encourages education and achievement in the women of today and stimulates debate about issues affecting social justice and gender.

The Otago Women Lawyers' Society says it is very pleased to have Una Jagose QC as the 2019 speaker, especially as Ms Jagose studied law at the University of Otago like Ethel Benjamin. 

Una Jagose completed a post-graduate degree in law at Victoria University in Wellington, and she was admitted to the bar in 1990. She started her career at the then Ministry of Consumer Affairs before moving to the Ministry of Fisheries where she was appointed Chief Legal Advisor in 1999.

In 2002, she joined the Crown Law Office and was appointed Deputy Solicitor-General in 2012. She was appointed Acting Director of the Government Communications Security Bureau in 2015, Solicitor-General in February 2016, and Queen’s Counsel in June 2016. She is the first woman to be appointed Solicitor-General.
