A company has been fined $500,000 dollars following the death of an elderly man who died after falling from a mobility scooter on a damaged footpath.

Shannon Thomson Concrete Pumps Limited sentenced was in the District Court at Manukau on 4 September 2019 following conviction for breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

WorkSafe Chief Investigator Hayden Mander says that the company had previously been convicted of obstructing the WorkSafe investigation in May 2018. The company’s “total lack of regard for the family and the company’s role in the man’s death is reflected in this massive fine”.

The Judge did not find any mitigating factors from a starting point of $500,000.
