The Environmental Reporting Act 2015 will come into force on 27 June 2016, with the Environmental Reporting Act Commencement Order 2016 having been gazetted.

The Act requires the Secretary for the Environment and the Government Statistician to jointly produce and publish "synthesis" reports on New Zealand's environment every three years.

These must include information on the state of the environment and the pressures that may be causing or have the potential to cause changes to the state of the environment.

The Secretary and Government Statistician are also required to produce and publish "domain" reports on the air domain, the atmosphere and climate domain, the freshwater domain, the land domain, and the marine domain.

The first of these domain reports must be published within 18 months of the Act coming into force, followed by reports on the other domains at six-monthly intervals. All domains must be reported on each three years.
