Family violence terms translated as support measure

This article is over 3 years old. More recent information on this subject may exist.

The Ministry of Justice's Family Violence Implementation team has arranged for the translation of frequently used family violence terms into 13 languages.

The initiative is aimed at supporting people involved in court proceedings who have English as a second language.

The languages are Arabic, Farsi, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, Samoan, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Thai, Tongan, Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese.

The ministry says these are the languages most commonly used by immigrants to New Zealand. It says the nitiative was proposed by Judge Fraser in Auckland, so that people appearing in court in relation to family violence can more easily describe what happened to them.

The translations were prepared by the Department of Internal Affairs Translation Service. The translation documents are available here.
