Five Deputy Chairpersons for Human Rights Review Tribunal

Five Deputy Chairpersons have been appointed to the Human Rights Review Tribunal. This follows changes made by sections 101A to 101C of the Tribunals Powers and Procedures Legislation Act 2018 which enable Deputy Chairpersons to share decision-making and decision-writing duties with the Chairpersons.

Katherine Anderson is an Auckland barrister and foundation member of Auckland’s Sangro Chambers. She was appointed a member of the Human Rights Tribunal in 2013. Admitted in May 1995, Ms Anderson is experienced in litigation and public law and has worked for government departments, the New Zealand Police, Auckland Council and as a partner at Anthony Harper before moving to the Bar.

Martha Coleman is a Wellington barrister. She was admitted in May 1997 has worked as a solicitor at Chapman Tripp, a Court of Appeal Judges’ clerk and university lecturer. She was employed by the Crown Law Office for 14 years as a Crown Counsel specialising in human rights until 2014 when she moved to the Bar. Ms Coleman has been a Parole Board Convenor since 2017, a Parole Board member from 2014 and a District Inspector for Mental Health since 2017.

Sarah Eyre is a Dunedin barrister of Tongan and Pākehā descent and was admitted in May 2000. She worked as a Refugee Status Officer from 2000 to 2002 and for an Auckland law firm from 2003 to 2011. She has extensive experience working with diverse and minority groups and is currently a Visiting Justice (since 2015), a Disputes Tribunal Referee (since 2011) and a member of the Real Estate Agents Authority Complaints Assessment Committee (since 2014).

Jane Foster is general counsel at the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, where her main responsibility is providing expert legal advice and quality assurance for the Commissioner, as well as managing any litigation in which the office is involved. Admitted in September 1995, she has worked as a litigation solicitor for Chapman Tripp and for the Crown Law Office in the Human Rights Team for 15 years.

Gillian Goodwin is a partner with Anthony Harper and a panel member for the Human Rights Review Tribunal since 2013. She was admitted in February 1980 and has been a partner in major law firms for the past 29 years. Her area of expertise is corporate and commercial law with an emphasis on securities law and finance. She is a member of the Institute of Directors and the ADLS Inc commercial law committee.
