Gradual increase in Court of Appeal workload

Statistics released by the Courts of New Zealand website show there has been a gradual increase over the last three years in the number of appeals filed in the Court of Appeal.

In the 2018 calendar year, 697 appeals were filed, up 6.1% from 657 appeals filed in 2017 and up 17.3% from 2016.

New civil appeal filings in 2018 were up 2% on 2017, while new criminal appeal filings were up 8% on 2017.

The information shows there were a total of 620 cases disposed in 2018, which was down 7.6% on 2017. Criminal cases disposed were down 7% and civil cases disposed were down 10.6%.

New civil application filings in 2018 were up 22% to 193, while new criminal applications filings were up 41% to 113.
