The Court of Appeal issued 672 judgments in the year to 30 June 2019. This was up 15% on the 582 judgments issued by the Court in the year to 30 June 2018.

Annual statistics released by the Courts of New Zealand for the Court of Appeal show the Court's total workload was up 3% in the 2018/19 year, with 626 appeals (647 in 2017/18) and 270 applications (222) filed.

At 30 June 2019 the Court of Appeal had 457 appeals on hand - 11 more than at 30 June 2018. There were 88 applications on hand at 30 June 2019, 29 fewer than at the same time in 2018.

On a jurisdictional basis, the data shows that over the past five years there has been a decline in both criminal and civil appeals filed. Compared to the year to 30 June 2014, the number of new criminal appeals filed in the 2018/19 year has declined by 9.4% in the five year period, while the number of new civil appeals filed has declined by 26.0%.
