Parliament has given a third reading to the Conservation (Indigenous Freshwater Fish) Amendment Bill. It comes into force on the day after receiving the Royal assent.

The new law amends the Conservation Act 1987 and the Freshwater Fisheries Regulations 1983 with the objective of improving how fisheries are managed under the Conservation Act.

The bill gives the Director-General of Conservation the power to authorise the taking of indigenous freshwater fish from a conservation area in certain circumstances.
