Minister releases data on child sex offender name suppression

This article is over 3 years old. More recent information on this subject may exist.

Justice Minister Amy Adams has released information on name suppression in cases where there was at least one convicted charge for a sexual offence against a child.

Ms Adams released in the information in response to a written parliamentary question from New Zealand First MP Darroch Ball.

Mr Ball asked for information from 1990 to 2015, but Ms Adams says information on name suppression and other directions is only available from 2004.

Based on the information provided, the proportion of cases where final name suppression is ordered has remained relatively constant in the period 2004 to 2015. In 2004 11% of cases resulted in final name suppression and in 2015 11% of cases resulted in final name suppression. There also appears to have been little fluctuation in the proportion of cases with interim name suppression orders.
