Parliament's Education and Workforce Committee has released a report on the Accident Compensation Amendment Bill, with a recommendation that it be passed with amendments.

The bill seeks to amend the Accident Compensation Act 2001, with the changes aimed at addressing some issues in ACC coverage and correcting regulatory duplication, errors and inconsistencies.

The bill would remove the requirement for ACC clients and their dependents to choose between weekly compensation and New Zealand Superannuation or the Veterans' Pension. It would address a gap in coverage for spouses, partners, and dependents of New Zealand dependents posted overseas, allow surviving spouses to receive up to 5 years of weekly compensation regardless of age, and disestablish the Accident Compensation Appeal Authority.

The committee has recommended that the provision for removal of the election between weekly compensation and New Zealand Superannuation or the Veterans' Pension commence on 1 July 2019, with the rest of the bill coming into force on the day after the Royal assent.
