The Office of the Privacy Commissioner has released a report giving guidance to local authorities on how to balance giving wide access to council held online property and building records with the desire for some degree of privacy in those records.

The Privacy and Online Property Information Report 2016 says the Privacy Commissioner has received over 100 complaints and inquiries so far about the privacy implications of local government property and building information.

The report is accompanied by a more detailed Privacy and Online Property Information Background Paper 2016

The Privacy Commissioner says it is not for his office to direct Councils how to design efficient and user-friendly online property and building record systems.

However, he says councils have said they want greater clarity about their privacy obligations in respect of online property and building information.
