Former lawyer appointed Police Commissioner

Andrew Coster has been appointed Police Commissioner for a five-year term beginning on 3 April 2020. He will take over from retiring Commissioner Mike Bush.

Mr Coster has an LLB(Hons) from the University of Auckland and a masters degree in public management.

He graduated from the New Zealand Police College in April 1997 and worked in various frontline and investigative roles until he was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 2004. This was followed by a period working as a solicitor with Crown Solicitor Meredith Connell. In 2016 he was seconded to the Ministry of Justice as Deputy Chief Executive, where he led the development of a five-year plan to modernise courts and tribunals.
