AMINZ referral email scam
This involves an email sent to members of the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ).
The email is sent from a gmail account from a “Rod Aquino” and seeks assistance in collecting a debt.
Like many lawyer scams the intention is for the target to agree to collect the debt, bank a forged cheque for the amount, and then remit the balancd of the funds to the scammer before the cheque is dishonoured.
AMINZ Executive Director Deborah Hart says AMINZ only makes referrals to members who are on its panels and lists and it always contacts the member directly when it makes a referral.
“The public can see member listings of those on panels and lists and we often ‘refer’ members of the public to use these panels and lists in finding a dispute resolution professional. We also ‘refer’ members of the public to our membership generally,” she says.
“AMINZ has not made any referral for Mr Aquino. The emails are almost certainly a scam. We believe member email addresses have been obtained via the AMINZ website. Membesr should be warded to exercise extreme care.”
