Check banking detail change emails from known real estate agents
Lawyers involved in property transactions need to be very careful when receiving email communications from real estate agents and other businesses they are familiar with.
A phone call or face to face communication is highly recommended to confirm any advice or instruction which involves a change of bank account details.
There are many examples of successful and attempted fraud by criminals targeting lawyers in property transactions.
A New Zealand lawyer has reported receiving an email purporting to have been sent from a known estate agent which in reality had been prepared by a fraudster.
The email stated:
"I want it to come to your notice that we have recently had a change in our banking details. Can you please confirm when a balance would be paid so our new banking details can be forwarded to you?
"Kind regards .... Real Estate."
