Conference to mark the retirement of the Chief Justice, Auckland, 31 January 2019

The Legal Research Foundation, with the support of the New Zealand Law Foundation, is hosting a conference to mark the retirement of Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias.  

Distinguished international and local speakers will explore the direction of New Zealand law.

Speakers include
  • Justice Rosalie Abella, Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada,
  • Professor Stuart Banner, Norman Abrams Professor of Law, UCLA,
  • Professor Richard Boast QC, Faculty of Law, Victoria University of Wellington,
  • Manuel Cepeda Espinosa, President Emeritus of the International Association of Constitutional Law and formerly a Justice and President of the Constitutional Court of Colombia,
  • Sir Kenneth Keith QC, retired Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand,
  • Justice Susan Kiefel AC, Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia,
  • Sir Anthony Mason AC KBE CBE QC, formerly the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia.

The conference will be chaired by Andrew Butler, Chair of the New Zealand Law Foundation.

This is the principal opportunity for the New Zealand legal profession to acknowledge the Chief Justice upon her retirement.  A pre-conference pƍwhiri will take place at Waipapa Marae, University of Auckland at 4pm on Wednesday, 30 January. The two-day conference will close with a dinner on the Friday at the Auckland museum.
