Lawyers In Practice Statistics: Administrative and Public law

Information obtained from holders of current practising certificates shows that at mid-January 2011, 188 practitioners spent over 50% of their time working in administrative and public law.

This was 2.9% of all lawyers who indicated an area of practice where they spent over half of their time. Administrative and public law is the 10th-most important area of practice by number of lawyers specialising in it (ie, spending over half their time).

The proportion of lawyers specialising in administrative and public law varied by location, with by far the highest proportion in Wellington where 5.0% of all practising certificate holders spend over half their time practising administrative and public law. In all other branch areas, there was a very low proportion of specialists in the field.

There were 1,556 lawyers (13.7% of all practising certificate holders) who spent some of their time working in administrative and public law. Wellington was again the centre with the highest proportion of lawyers doing some work in field.

In Wellington, 22.9% of all lawyers spent some time working in administrative and public law. Other branches with a relatively high proportion of lawyers spending some time on administrative and public law were Nelson (16.7%) and Whanganui (16.4%).

Branches where the lowest proportion of lawyers spent at least some time on administrative and public law were Gisborne (7.1%) and Marlborough (9.6%).
