Lawyers In Practice Statistics: Civil Litigation

Information obtained from holders of current practising certificates shows that at mid-January 2011, 844 practitioners spent over 50% of their time working in civil litigation.

This was 13.1% of all lawyers who indicated an area of practice where they spent over half of their time. Civil litigation is the third-most important area of practice in New Zealand by number of lawyers specialising in it (ie, spending over half their time).

The proportion of lawyers specialising in civil litigation varied by location, with the main population centres tending to have the highest proportion. In the Auckland branch area, 9.2% of all practising certificate holders spent over half their time on civil litigation, followed by Otago (7.6%), Canterbury-Westland (7.4%) and Wellington (6.2%). The lowest proportion of civil litigation specialists was found in Whanganui (1.5%), Marlborough (1.9%) and Taranaki (3.4%).

There were 3,386 lawyers (29.7% of all practising certificate holders) who spent some of their time working in civil litigation.

In Canterbury-Westland, 35.8% of all branch lawyers spent some time working in civil litigation. Other branches with a relatively high proportion of lawyers spending some time on civil litigation were Gisborne (35.7%) and Marlborough (34.6%).

Branches where the lowest proportion of lawyers spent at least some time on civil litigation were Manawatu and Southland (28.3% in each).
