Lawyers In Practice Statistics: Family Law

Information obtained from holders of current practising certificates shows that at mid-January 2011, 695 practitioners spent over 50% of their time working in family law.

This was 10.8% of all lawyers who indicated an area of practice where they spent over half of their time. Family law is the fourth-most important area of practice by number of lawyers specialising in it (ie, spending over half their time).

There were 2,775 lawyers (24.4% of all practising certificate holders) who spent some of their time working in family law. The number of lawyers specialising in family law varied by location. In Whanganui branch, 17.9% of all practising certificate holders spent over half their time practising family law, followed by Taranaki (15.5%) and Hawke’s Bay (12.9%). The lowest proportions were in Wellington (3.5% of branch lawyers spent over half their time practising family law), Auckland (5.3%) and Canterbury-Westland (7.1%).

Practitioners who spent at least some of their time on family law made up a higher proportion of total lawyers in a branch where the branch was located outside a major population centre.

In Whanganui, 50.7% of all branch members spent some time working in family law. Other branches with a relatively high proportion of lawyers spending some time on family law were Gisborne (42.9%), Manawatu (40.7%) and Taranaki (38.5%).

Branches where the lowest proportion of members spent at least some time on family law were Wellington (16.0%) and Auckland (21.7%).
