Lawyers In Practice Statistics: Intellectual Property

Information obtained from holders of current practising certificates shows that at mid-January 2011, 177 practitioners spent over 50% of their time practising intellectual property.

This was 2.8% of all lawyers who indicated an area of practice where they spent over half of their time. Intellectual property is the 11th-most important area of practice in New Zealand by number of lawyers specialising in it (ie, spending over half their time).

Most of the lawyers who said they spent most of their time working in intellectual property were located in the two biggest branches, with 53% located in Auckland (94 lawyers), and 29% in Wellington (52 lawyers).

There were 1,360 lawyers (11.9% of all practising certificate holders) who spent some of their time working in intellectual property.

In Taranaki, 14.9% of all branch lawyers spent some time working on intellectual property law. Other branches with a relatively high proportion of lawyers spending some time on intellectual property were Canterbury-Westland (14.0%) and Wellington (12.7%).

Branches where the lowest proportion of lawyers spent at least some time on intellectual property were Whanganui (3.0%) and Marlborough (5.8%).
