Lawyers In Practice Statistics: Resource Management

Information obtained from holders of current practising certificates shows that at mid-January 2011, 259 practitioners spent over 50% of their time working in resource management law.

This was 4.0% of all lawyers who indicated an area of practice where they spent over half of their time. Resource management law is the seventh-most important area of practice by number of lawyers specialising in it (ie, spending over half their time).

There were 1,379 lawyers (12.1% of all practising certificate holders) who spent some of their time working in resource management law. The number of lawyers specialising in resource management law varied by location. In Otago branch, 3.7% of all practising certificate holders spent over half their time practising resource management law, followed by Nelson (3.5%) and Canterbury-Westland (2.9%). The lowest proportions were in Gisborne and Whanganui (no branch lawyers spent over half their time practising resource management law) and Southland (0.7%).

Practitioners who spent at least some of their time on employment law made up a higher proportion of total lawyers in a branch where the branch was located outside a major population centre.

In Otago, 26.4% of all branch members spent some time working in resource management law. Other branches with a relatively high proportion of lawyers spending some time on resource management law were Marlborough (23.1%), Nelson (21.5%) and Hawke’s Bay (20.0%).
