Lawyers In Practice Statistics: Treaty and Maori issues

Information obtained from holders of current practising certificates shows that at mid-January 2011, 77 practitioners spent over 50% of their time working in Treaty and Maori issues.

This was 1.2% of all lawyers who indicated an area of practice where they spent over half of their time. Treaty and Maori issues is the 16th-most important area of practice in New Zealand by number of lawyers specialising in it (ie, spending over half their time).

The proportion of lawyers specialising in Treaty and Maori issues varied by location. In the Gisborne branch area, 3.6% of all practising certificate holders spent over half their time practising Treaty and Maori issues, followed by Whanganui (1.5%) and Wellington (1.2%). The information shows that there were three branch areas where there were no lawyers who said they spent over half their time practising Treaty and Maori issues: Nelson, Southland and Taranaki.

There were 342 lawyers (3.0% of all practising certificate holders) who spent some of their time working in Treaty and Maori issues.

In Gisborne, 8.9% of all branch lawyers spent some time working in Treaty and Maori issues. Other branches with a relatively high proportion of lawyers spending some time on Treaty and Maori issues were Whanganui (6.0%) and Waikato Bay of Plenty (5.6%).

Branches where the lowest proportion of lawyers spent at least some time on Treaty and Maori issues were Southland (0.7%) and Canterbury-Westland (1.3%).
