We are calling for applications from persons interested in making alcohol licensing decisions to be Commissioner of the Hamilton District Licensing Committee. The District Licensing Committee consists of a Commissioner and two other Committee members drawn from a list of members appointed by the Hamilton City Council (HCC).

Hamilton City Council invites expressions of interest from suitable persons for consideration for appointment as Commissioner.  We are committed to diversity and inclusion and are active members of Diversity Works New Zealand.  We are thus seeking a Commissioner who will reflect Kirikiriroa/ Hamilton’s diverse community, demonstrate knowledge and experience in Te Tiriti o Waitangi, a level of proficiency in Te Ao Maori and some knowledge of Tikanga.

The District Licensing Committee is responsible for determining all alcohol licences and manager’s certificates in Hamilton.  We are looking for applicants with strong skills and experience, including:

  • Legal background including previous litigation of tribunal hearing experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 and how it is applied
  • Understanding of Hamilton’s diverse communities and their expectations around alcohol licensing
  • Highly developed decision-making skills and investigative ability
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the hearing process
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Some knowledge of alcohol-related harm in Hamilton
  • Relevant alcohol licensing experience

Please note that applicants must not have any involvement, or the appearance of involvement in the alcohol industry or alcohol retail business.

Applicants should be prepared for flexible working hours, noting that this is not a full-time role. Successful candidates will be contracted to the Hamilton City Council and will not be employees of the council.  Work will be on an ‘as required’ basis at the remuneration set by the Minister of Justice.
