New Zealand Law Society - Coroner and Relief Coroner

Coroner and Relief Coroner

Expressions of interest are invited from persons wishing to be considered for appointment as a coroner, or as a relief coroner, under the Coroners Act 2006.

Applicants must have held a practising certificate as a barrister or solicitor for at least 5 years.

The role of coroners is to inquire into the cause of death where the death appears to have been violent, unnatural, without known cause, a suicide, or appears to have occurred while the deceased was in the custody, and also to make recommendations for the purpose of reducing the chances of further deaths occurring in similar circumstances.

There is a vacancy for an Auckland based coroner. This is a full-time tenured position.

A full-time relief coroner position is also available on a two-year appointment term. The location for this position is negotiable, but the appointee will need the flexibility to cover other areas both remotely and by travel.

A position description and application forms are available from the Ministry of Justice website https://www.justice.govt.nz/about/statutory-vacancies/#Coroner.

Applications close 4pm Thursday 15 October 2026.
