Are you an experienced criminal defence lawyer with recent duty lawyer experience? If so, we are looking for someone just like you to help lead the Duty Lawyer Service at our South Auckland Courts - principally at Manukau, but with potentially some coverage at Papakura and Pukekohe. This role can be full-time or part-time, 32 hours.

The Public Defence Service (PDS) provides high quality legal advice and representation in a full range of criminal cases. Aimed at helping people access justice, the PDS promotes the MOJ values of respect, integrity, service and the delivery of excellent service to its clients.

He pūkenga tou / Skills and experience

To be successful in this role you must be passionate about criminal justice issues and:

  • be qualified to practice law in New Zealand
  • have Provider Approval Level 1 or above, as well as Duty Lawyer approval
  • have proven credibility with Judges, peers and others in the legal community
  • be comfortable as part of a team who support and rely on one-another
  • enjoy sharing legal expertise and exchanging ideas
  • have empathy and the ability to relate to a wide range of people
  • be able to travel across the South Auckland courts.

This is a satisfying role which our Duty Lawyer Supervisors enjoy undertaking. You will report to the Senior Duty Lawyer Supervisor Northern and work closely with the Deputy Senior Duty Lawyer Supervisor.

The PDS is part of the Ministry of Justice and the wider justice sector. The Ministry provides centralised business services, infrastructure and support to the work of the PDS.

Salary Range per annum - band PDS6: $120,868 (85%) - $154,995 (109%) based on skills and experience. Prorated, for part time hours.
