The Office Public Defender is primarily responsible for leading the legal staff and developing the strategies and practices required to enable the office to continuously improve delivery of its services. This role requires a seasoned leader who is able to drive the development of leadership capability in the office to support an engaged, high-performing workforce.

  • Provide effective leadership to the office and contribute to the leadership of PDS
  • Contribute to the growth and development of some of New Zealand's best and brightest young lawyers
  • Model well developed interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach

The Public Defence Service (PDS) is a strong, independent, professional, people-centred criminal law practice, providing high quality legal advice and representation in a full range of criminal cases. Aimed at helping people access justice, the PDS promotes the values of respect, integrity, service and the delivery of excellent service to its clients.

The successful candidate for this role will set the tone, expectations and culture of the office, creating an environment of trust, respect and ongoing learning.

To be successful in this role:

  • You will have proven experience in developing business and workforce strategies and implementing vision
    Your leadership will engage and inspire your people to deliver a professional and dynamic service
  • You must be passionate about criminal justice issues and have a reputation for highly effective advocacy, stakeholder management, communication and leadership
  • You must have a criminal lawyer provider approval at level 4, or the ability to obtain it in the near future and be qualified to practise law in New Zealand

Salary Range per annum: $138,855 (85%) - $196,030 per annum (120%). Starting salary will be dependant on the successful candidates skills and experience.
