Our culture is supportive and flexible and our mahi is transformative. We empower our kaimahi to bring their best because that’s when we’re at our best. We are one team, stronger working together as a collective |He tira kotahi tātou, he hoehoe tahi, he tū tahi.

Engineering New Zealand’s legal team manages the organisation’s professional disciplinary process, investigating complaints made about engineers. The team also provides day-to-day in-house legal services, works with government departments on projects of national significance, and understands the challenges of delivering to widening public expectations.

About the role | Mō te tūranga mahi
Located in Wellington CBD, you will report to the Legal Team Leader and work alongside a stellar team, receiving first-class mentoring to advance your legal career. This interesting and challenging role encompasses advising on and managing complaints, responding to litigation on appeal, general legal advice, and taking a role in other projects that arise.

Here are some examples of what you’ll be doing:

  • Advising investigating and disciplinary committees on complaints, ensuring they proceed in a professional and timely manner in accordance with natural justice
  • Effectively working with complainants and engineers to encourage the early resolution of complaints.
  • Providing practical and responsive legal advice on a variety of in-house matters to Engineering New Zealand.
  • Working across and managing all elements of complaints and appeals, including correspondence with other parties, preparing bundles, drafting submissions and, on occasion, delivering oral submissions.
  • Identifying issues and proactive solutions that will eliminate or mitigate risk.
  • Proactively establishing and maintaining effective relationships with a range of stakeholders.

Who we're looking for | Tā mātou e kimi nei
You may be a recent graduate eager to develop and grow your skills in a regulatory setting or have a few years of legal experience looking to solidify your skills. This role will offer you a broad introduction to the complaints and regulation process, or build on any experience you have here.

You will enjoy the challenge of juggling multiple priorities, using your initiative to provide a top-quality, professional service to our members and the general public.

Taking pride in the service you provide will be just as important as your exceptional communication skills and the ability to quickly build positive relationships with others.

You will bring:

  • A Bachelor of Laws, or other comparable international qualification with the ability to practise law in New Zealand.
  • Up to 3 years of practical experience in the legal profession.
  • A current practising certificate or be eligible/working towards eligibility to obtain one.
  • Some experience or interest in litigation.
  • Empathy and pragmatism.
  • A collaborative approach to your work.
  • Ability to see the bigger picture.

We want to hear from you if you think you can bring value to the role, not because you tick every box. We want to hear about your ideas, experience and what you'll bring to deliver on our ambitions.
