Farmlands Co-operative is New Zealand's largest rural supplies and services Co-operative. We are one of NZ's largest businesses, and provide technical advice and solutions across almost every aspect of the primary sector. 

Farmlands has a strong core retail business with over 80 stores in its network. It has a well-established shareholder card network (with over 75,000 shareholders and over 7,000 card partner locations), with operations dealing with feed production, nutrition, ecommerce, fuel, distribution, agronomy, and a wide variety of other areas. 

The Role 

Based at our National Support Office in Wairakei Road, Christchurch, we have an opportunity for an In-house Legal Counsel to join our Risk, Legal & Governance team, reporting to Farmlands Head of Legal. This role will be a key member of a wider team dealing with legal issues, risk, internal audit, policy, and compliance. 

The role offers interaction at all levels of the business. Along with the Risk, Legal & Governance team, you will work closely with senior management, finance, marketing, IT and supply chain divisions, to effectively provide legal advice that balances risk and business outcomes. This is an opportunity to deal with a diverse range of legal work and projects for a dynamic business, building your general commercial acumen and legal skills. 

About you 

Ideally, you will come from a commercial or in-house environment and have:  

• LLB qualification with a current practising certificate 
• 2-4 year's post-admission experience  
• A solid commercial law skill set 
• Sound contract drafting and negotiation skills 
• Previous experience advising clients in consumer law, agency, competition law, CCCFA compliance, AML/CFT compliance, and commercial law areas would be ideal 
• Excellent communication, influencing and interpersonal skills 
• A creative and innovative mindset and a drive to succeed 
• Connection to the NZ rural sector is preferred but not essential 
• The ability to embrace and drive change in a transforming business
