New Zealand Law Society - Legal Counsel

Legal Counsel

  • P/T flexible hours and flexible location
  • In-house role in dynamic and growing business
  • Potentially Nelson based with national reach

Matthews Eyecare is a group of independent optometry practices currently operating 22 practices throughout New Zealand. Their values show their commitment to expert, personalised service and their product range and technical expertise reflect the best from around the world. Some practices are owned via JVs and equity shareholding arrangements.  Growth has been through acquisition and further expansion of the group is planned including new business models.  Commercial and financial support is provided from their central offices in Nelson.

To date external counsel has provided legal support for commercial arrangements and will continue to be involved as required.

Matthews would now like to secure a lawyer with appropriate broad commercial expertise to join their team. You will support acquisition projects, partner in negotiations, draft and develop leases and new business models. Partnering with the CEO and as a member of the SLT, you will understand and enable Matthews strategic direction and business plans. You will advise on the risks and legal issues related to issues and opportunities, propose creative and practical solutions while managing legal risk and have the expertise to independently implement these. Company secretarial functions are also envisaged.

To be successful in this role, you will be a qualified lawyer with a current practicing certificate, have strong commercial law experience from an in-house role or from within a law firm supporting clients with their commercial activities. You will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and enjoy positively contributing to the management team to achieve strategic goals.

The role is part-time – 24-30 hours a week with flexibility. While ideally the incumbent would be based in Nelson, for the right candidate we would consider other locations.

The company offers a dynamic and collaborative environment where relationships and expertise are valued. This is your chance to make your mark in a sizeable Nelson company with national reach embracing opportunities for growth.
